General Organisation of the parasympathetic nervous system

  • Origin of the Preganglionic nerve
    • from cranial nerves III, VII, IX and X and S2-S4 in spinal cord (i.e. craniosacral outflow)
  • Preganglionic nerve axon is long
  • Postganglionic nerve axon is short
  • Ganglion has nicotinic receptor
  • Neurotransmitter is Acetylcholine in ganglion and effector organ
  • In effector organ there are muscarinic receptors
